Weight is a stand-in for size. A dog right at the top of a range, or long for its weight, may need the next size up: a 40-pound dog that is long in the back can need 36 inches. When the dog is grown, check with a tape: length plus 4 inches.
The weight bands follow the crate chart PetMD publishes; the plus-4-inches rule is the one Chewy and crate maker MidWest give. Breed weights are typical adult ranges and vary from dog to dog. Sizes here are lengths; widths differ by brand.
