A mix, or not on the list? Use Adult weight.
For a grown dog. Measure it standing, and sitting up.
For a puppy: the weight you expect it to reach as an adult. Not sure? Give a range.

Medium means 30 inches, most of the time
Most brands call a 30-inch crate medium. Some sell a 36-inch crate as medium or "intermediate", so go by the inches, not the name.
| Adult weight | Crate length | Dog length up to |
|---|---|---|
| 26 to 40 lb | 30 in | 26 in |
| 41 to 70 lb | 36 in | 32 in |
A 30-inch crate fits a Beagle, a Corgi, a French Bulldog or a Cocker Spaniel as adults. A 36-inch crate fits an Australian Shepherd, a Border Collie or a Siberian Husky.
Between the two? A dog that will weigh near 40 pounds, or is long for its weight, does better in 36 inches with the divider in for now.
The weight bands follow the crate chart PetMD publishes; the plus-4-inches rule is the one Chewy and crate maker MidWest give. Breed weights are typical adult ranges and vary from dog to dog. Sizes here are lengths; widths differ by brand.
