A mix, or not on the list? Use Adult weight.
For a grown dog. Measure it standing, and sitting up.
For a puppy: the weight you expect it to reach as an adult. Not sure? Give a range.
The red pin marks the crate length on the tape, in inches.

42 inches for the big family dogs
A 42-inch crate is the usual large size. It fits a grown dog of 71 to 90 pounds that is up to 38 inches long, nose to base of tail.
| Adult weight | Crate length | Dog length up to |
|---|---|---|
| 41 to 70 lb | 36 in | 32 in |
| 71 to 90 lb | 42 in | 38 in |
| 91 to 110 lb | 48 in | 44 in |
That is the size for most adult Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Boxers. A lean dog near 60 pounds may fit 36 inches, and a tall or long one near 90 pounds may need 48. Measure the grown dog when you can: length plus 4 inches.
The weight bands follow the crate chart PetMD publishes; the plus-4-inches rule is the one Chewy and crate maker MidWest give. Breed weights are typical adult ranges and vary from dog to dog. Sizes here are lengths; widths differ by brand.
