For a grown dog. Measure it standing, and sitting up.
For a puppy: the weight you expect it to reach as an adult. Not sure? Give a range.

48 inches, then giant
48 inches is the largest of the standard crate lengths. It fits a grown dog of 91 to 110 pounds that is up to 44 inches long, nose to base of tail: a big Doberman, an Old English Sheepdog, many Rottweilers.
Some brands call 48 inches "extra large" and sell longer crates as XXL or giant. Over 110 pounds, a Great Dane, Mastiff or Saint Bernard for instance, no standard size fits: measure the grown dog and add 4 inches to its length and to its sitting height, and look for a giant crate at least that big inside.
Tall dogs run out of height before length. Check the inside height against your dog's sitting height plus 4 inches.
The weight bands follow the crate chart PetMD publishes; the plus-4-inches rule is the one Chewy and crate maker MidWest give. Breed weights are typical adult ranges and vary from dog to dog. Sizes here are lengths; widths differ by brand.
