The seven standard crate lengths

Most wire and plastic crates come in seven lengths: 18, 22, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 inches. The length is the number in the product name. Width and height differ by brand, so the length is the dimension to choose by, then check the inside height.

26 to 40 lb30 in26 in

71 to 90 lb42 in38 in
91 to 110 lb48 in44 in

The last column is the crate length minus 4 inches: the longest dog, nose to base of tail, that the crate fits with room to turn and stretch. A crate also needs to be about 4 inches taller inside than your dog's head when it sits.

Over 110 pounds, no standard size fits. Giant crates are sold longer than 48 inches; measure the grown dog and add 4 inches to its length and sitting height.

The weight bands follow the crate chart PetMD publishes; the plus-4-inches rule is the one Chewy and crate maker MidWest give. Breed weights are typical adult ranges and vary from dog to dog. Sizes here are lengths; widths differ by brand.

Questions

What are the dimensions of a 36-inch dog crate?

It is 36 inches long. Width and height vary by brand, so read the listed inside height and compare it with your dog's sitting height plus 4 inches.

Which crate dimension matters most?

Length first, because crates are sold by it, then inside height. Width follows from the length in most designs.

Is a crate's listed size inside or outside?

Brands usually list outside dimensions. The inside is a little smaller, so when your dog is close to the limit, choose the next size up.

What size crate for a dog over 110 pounds?

No standard size. Measure the grown dog, add 4 inches to its length and to its sitting height, and look for a giant crate at least that big inside.
