Dog crate size chart by adult weight

Crate sizes are named by length. Find the weight your dog will reach as an adult.

Adult weightCrate lengthFor example
Up to 6 lb18 inChihuahua, toy poodle
7 to 12 lb22 inMaltese, Yorkie, Papillon
13 to 25 lb24 inPug, Shih Tzu, Boston Terrier

41 to 70 lb36 inAustralian Shepherd, Border Collie, Husky
71 to 90 lb42 inGolden, Lab, German Shepherd, Boxer
91 to 110 lb48 inDoberman, Old English Sheepdog
Over 110 lbMeasureGreat Dane, Mastiff, Saint Bernard
Over 110 pounds, no standard crate size covers the dog. Measure the grown dog and add 4 inches to its length and its sitting height, then check a giant crate's inside size against that.

How it works

  1. Size for the adultA puppy outgrows a small crate within months. The answer is the crate for the grown dog, so you buy once.
  2. Tape: add 4 inchesA grown dog needs a crate about 4 inches longer than its length, nose to base of tail, and 4 inches taller than its head when it sits. We round up to the next common crate size.
  3. Weight: the size chartA puppy can't be measured for its adult size, so its expected adult weight picks the size. If you only know a range, buy the larger size and use the divider.
  4. Divider: today's length plus 4Many wire crates come with a divider panel. Set it so the space is your puppy's length today plus 4 inches, and move it back as the puppy grows.

The weight bands follow the crate chart PetMD publishes; the plus-4-inches rule is the one Chewy and crate maker MidWest give. Breed weights are typical adult ranges and vary from dog to dog. Sizes here are lengths; widths differ by brand.

Questions

Can a crate be too big for a puppy?

A big crate leaves room to soil one end and sleep at the other. That's what the divider is for: it shrinks the space now, and the same crate fits the grown dog.

My puppy is a mix. What size crate?

Use Adult weight. If you can, ask the breeder or shelter what the parents weigh; if you can only guess a range, type both ends, and buy the larger size with a divider.

Between two sizes?

Choose the larger one. A crate a few inches long is easy to fill with the divider or a bed; one too short can't be fixed.

Does this work for airline crates?

No. Airlines set their own carrier and crate rules; check with the airline.
