How it works
- Size for the adultA puppy outgrows a small crate within months. The answer is the crate for the grown dog, so you buy once.
- Tape: add 4 inchesA grown dog needs a crate about 4 inches longer than its length, nose to base of tail, and 4 inches taller than its head when it sits. We round up to the next common crate size.
- Weight: the size chartA puppy can't be measured for its adult size, so its expected adult weight picks the size. If you only know a range, buy the larger size and use the divider.
- Divider: today's length plus 4Many wire crates come with a divider panel. Set it so the space is your puppy's length today plus 4 inches, and move it back as the puppy grows.
The weight bands follow the crate chart PetMD publishes; the plus-4-inches rule is the one Chewy and crate maker MidWest give. Breed weights are typical adult ranges and vary from dog to dog. Sizes here are lengths; widths differ by brand.

Questions
Can a crate be too big for a puppy?
A big crate leaves room to soil one end and sleep at the other. That's what the divider is for: it shrinks the space now, and the same crate fits the grown dog.
My puppy is a mix. What size crate?
Use Adult weight. If you can, ask the breeder or shelter what the parents weigh; if you can only guess a range, type both ends, and buy the larger size with a divider.
Between two sizes?
Choose the larger one. A crate a few inches long is easy to fill with the divider or a bed; one too short can't be fixed.
Does this work for airline crates?
No. Airlines set their own carrier and crate rules; check with the airline.
